Q: How did you first get into DIY and home improvement?

MATTHEW CAMERON: It started with minor projects around the house, like repairing a leaky pipe or painting the bedroom. I love learning things by doing, and eventually it developed into a passion. I acquired a lot of different tools and took increasingly complex projects, and the more I did, the more I wanted to learn. Now it’s a big part of my life.

Q: What do you love most about home improvement work?

MATTHEW CAMERON: For me, it’s the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes when you do something tangible, that you’re going to see everyday and use everyday. You always remember the hard work that went into it, from troubleshooting different things as you go to getting through the final stages. There’s also a meditative aspect to it. I like getting into that zone, concentrating on what I have to do, and putting my screens aside for a little bit. It’s a great way to spend a weekend, especially when the results make everyday life a little better.

Q: How do you plan your DIY projects?

MATTHEW CAMERON: I start with a basic sketch or reference photo and just go from there. I typically research techniques or watch YouTube videos before jumping in. I’ve learned that a clear plan is absolutely essential in avoiding costly mistakes, even if that plan changes during the process. It’s always good to share ideas and learn from others, whether working on something at home or talking with other DIY people in Coquitlam.

Q: What’s behind the passion to continuously take on new projects?

MATTHEW CAMERON: I think it’s the challenge and the opportunity to learn. Each project, big or small, helps you learn something. Whether it be a technique, a tool, or just a better way of going about planning, there is always room to grow. Even when things don’t quite go to plan, that’s part of the fun as well. I also love to see how small adjustments can make a space feel more functional or more “me.” That feeling of progress is what keeps me coming back.

Q: What tips do you have for people who are beginners in home improvements?

MATTHEW CAMERON: Begin with small projects and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s all part of the process. There are so many resources available now, like videos, forums, and tutorials, so it’s easy to get your footing. I’d also say to spend on some high-quality tools early on. You don’t need it all from the start, but having a strong kit makes an immense difference when you get into more complicated projects.
