What Are You Waiting For? Sandbox To Success Episode 47

Today I’m going to talking to you all about what you’re waiting for! I’m seeing people all over say they’re starting a blog and they will launch later, or that they’d like to do something but are waiting for a time in the future. I want to know what you are waiting for!

Like a diet that always seems to start “next week” or “next month”, many people put off their goals to much later. For example, over a year ago I was in a Podcast Mastermind (a group of people together who all have a common goal and want to grow together), and none of us had a podcast at the time. Becoming podcasters was our common goal. Within two weeks of the mastermind I launched the Sandbox to Success Podcast. There were 4 other members in the group. After 4months I stopped going because not one single other person started their podcast! People recorded guest podcast, and purchased lots of equipment… but no one ever got started!

They waited and waited, spending an hour of their time regularly to speak and brainstorm in the group… but they never launched it!

Don’t have the skills right now?

What are you thinking you’d love to do right now? A blog, video, podcast? A second blog? Whatever it is… DO IT! Don’t be afraid that it won’t be perfect right off the bat. That’s okay! I recently launched a YouTube Channel called My Toy Planet with my daughter, and we’re constantly growing! The quality of our videos has increased each time we’ve posted! We did it with little skill and little money, and we’ve been able to learn and teach ourselves along the way.

Free Tools To Use

Google is a great resource to learn basically anything you need to know. There are tons of articles out there on whatever it is you’d like to learn, I guarantee. Udemy and Lynda.com are other resources, and they offer courses on basically anything you’d like to know!

Also, don’t be afraid to ask! If someone is too busy to teach you, they’ll likely still be able to point you in the right direction! Don’t have the time?

No matter who you are, there’s something you’re doing right now in your life that could be eliminated to free up more of your time. It could be as simple as watching TV, reading, etc. Those things are great, but if you’re passionate about your goals then you’ll need to change your priorities. You can also involve your family! My 4-year-old is with me all day and we’ve been working together since she was a baby. I tell her what time I’ll be done working, and then we’ll go somewhere afterwards. Like with the YouTube channel, I involve my family. My husband does the video, and my daughter and I host the show. She helps with scripting and picking out topics and themes. At the same time, she learning valuable skills that she can build upon and use to help her achieve later in life.

Audit your time and determine which areas you can adjust. When you’re starting a blog, your own business, a video channel etc… there will need to be some time committed to them. Make sure your family knows that! I choose to make my business a priority, rather than have a lot of other hobbies. My business is what I love to do!

Don’t have the finances?

When starting a new project, it’s a gamble on how much money you should put into it. When starting a blog, for example, there are places you can start blogging for free. If you plan on monetizing, however, I wouldn’t suggest going that route. One thing you can start with, however, is purchasing your domain. Godaddy has them on sale right now for $0.99 for a year, and if you find that after the first year you don’t want to continue blogging then it’s not much of an investment that has been lost. What Are You Waiting For? With something like a YouTube channel, there’s a bit more of an investment involved. You need something to record with. You likely already have a camera on your phone that takes video. You’ll just need lighting and to learn how to work it. We bought small lighting kit on Amazon (grab it here) and use our DSLR. We had a handy cam at one point, but the quality wasn’t the greatest. We purchased shower curtains from the Dollar Store and blackout fabric from the fabric store for $5 a meter on sale. Our total investment was under $120. You don’t even have ot spend that much… you can just grab your camera and talk into it. If you have an iPhone or other smartphone, be sure to take the case off for the best audio quality. You’ll also want to shoot in landscape mode rather than portrait mode for the best videos.

So, what are you waiting for? Is fear stop you? Don’t worry about being perfect. I’m not. I make concessions to work with the time, skill and money constraints… as most of us do. That’s okay! Being not completely perfect makes you more relatable. People don’t connect with Stepford Wives and robots. Try the things you really want to do, and make it work. Give it a good 6 months, and if it’s not giving you what you want then stop!
