Have you started a blog or small business and just don’t know how to get your ideas to the next level? Or do you feel like you’re off to a great start, but don’t know how to actually make money? Here at the Sandbox to Success Podcast, we want to help you take your home adventure or blog from a family affair to the business you dreamed of! In the time it takes you to get the kids ready for school, we’ll be teaching you the tips and tricks needed for success. Finding the info you need to succeed with your business can be difficult, but don’t worry! We’re here to help.
Today, I want to talk about “nichifiying” your business or blog. What does that mean? Picking a topic that’s important to you and taking it from a big idea to a little one. Why would you want a little idea? Yes, some people can be very successful in having big ideas and executing, but most businesses tailor to a specific audience This allows you to really tune-in to your targeted audience or customer.
When you look at your business or blog, I want you to think about what it is you’re passionate about. I love helping others and teaching. Sharing what I know with others brings me the most joy. For you, it could be children or whatever it is that you love. Think about the ideas and start writing them down.
From the ideas you write, find the ones that you are most passionate about. Which ones bring a smile to your face when you’re talking to others? DON’T go chasing the money! Go chasing the passion and the money should be able to follow.
For example, if you are talking about winter activities, focus on one specific sport such as hockey. Then narrow down to pond hockey, then equipment, then location, then proper ice conditions, etc. These are called pillars. The pillars of Thinking Outside The Sandbox, our main business blog, are small business; social media, and blogging. They all interconnect and are topics that closely relate to each other.
Between these 3 pillars, we have a lot to talk about. We know our audience is bloggers, small business owners, or wannabe bloggers and small business owners, as well as social media professionals.
Once you figure out what you want to talk about, think about the longevity. For instance, if you want to talk about family and babies specifically, think about whether you want to continue talking about that 3-5 years down the road. If you’d like to continue talking about the babies as they grow up, be sure to choose a niche that can grow with that. You don’t want to niche down to far that you’re re-branding or refocusing later.
Now, that’s not to say that if you choose one topic, you have to stay with it. One great example is Kim from Dirty Diaper Laundry. She has a cloth diaper focused blog, but she also has a passion for reusable menstrual products. That also goes into her blog and is included in her brand. Just be sure you’re always following your passion and what’s best for you.
Lastly, look at what else is out there. People say if there’s a ton of competition that means there’s an awesome market. That is good advice, but you also need to think about over-saturation. What do you have to offer that makes you unique? You really need to punch out YOU. Each person is unique. You need to celebrate that uniqueness and go for it.
Also, no competition doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s no market. It does mean, for sure, you’ll have to work harder to get your product and service out there and educate people on what you have to offer. Are YOU willing to put forth the effort and work to do that? There isn’t anything wrong with it. I did that with my first business. My used cloth diaper store was the only one in my country that I knew of at the time. It isn’t something that’s bad, but you do have to work harder to get it out there.
Until next week, I want you to be thinking about your passion. If you already have a small business or blog, just take another look at it. Is it what you really want to do? Is it your passion? Can you take what you’re doing now and target it down even smaller and really focus and put your passion out here? I know we’re busy. I know as moms we have a lot of crazy things going on.. but this little bit of work in the beginning or little bit of reflectiveness every few months or so will really push us further and help us succeed.
Have a great week, and talk to you next time!
