Travel to Toronto Verses Montreal – Planning Your Family City Break!

Have you considered travel to Toronto verses Montreal?

At this time of year its hard not to let your thoughts drift to the lovely world of vacations and holidays.

Have you considered travel to Toronto verses Montreal?

In today’s busy world it’s so hard to find quality pockets of time to spend with your family – too often we are rushed from breakfast to school, to work to after-school sports practice and a million other things in between!

Travel to Toronto versus Montreal

I don’t know about you but I’m already starting to plan our family summer break.

Vacation clubs can be a big help in planning a trip away, if you check out tweets by Royal Holiday you can check out offers and promotions as they happen too.

Canada has so much to offer on our own doorstep, so I’d like to ‘staycation’ in the country and I’m a big fan of the city break.

There is plenty to keep the kids entertained, culture to spare, always a fabulous and varied selection of food on offer, and plenty of hustle and bustle to get the senses stirring!

I’ve narrowed it down to two options, cosmopolitan Toronto or quaint and pretty Montreal.

If you plan to drive and you are not holding a Canadian drivers license you need to consider getting an International driver’s license for Canada.

I’m a big fan of making lists to decide the pros and cons of different places – in this particular case its quite hard to find too many ‘cons’ so I’m making a list of the ‘pros’ of both!

Montreal – pros

French? Oui, s’il vous plait!

I love that Montreal is a French-speaking city and with it retains a lot of European style charm and culture.

In fact, Montreal is the second largest primarily French speaking city in the world outside of Paris!

If your kids are learning French, or you would like them to start, this could be a fantastic way for them to immerse themselves in the language (or practice a few words at restaurants when ordering food).

Old world charm

The historic area of Montreal is a treat to behold, with European style architecture and cobbled streets aplenty.

Many of the cobbled streets have recently been restored and are frequented by horse-drawn carriages, which could be a fantastic experience if you are heading to the city for a family break.

Particular attractions to check out are the Old Port, Place Jacques-Cartier, the City Hall, Bonsecours Market, the Notre-Dame de Montreal Basilica and the Science Centre (a great place to bring the little ones).

Festival and culture buzz

There is a fantastic jazz tradition in the city, as well as a thriving visual arts, theatre, music and dance scene.

Not all will be perfect for your family.

But downtown Montreal in summer plays host to a multitude of festival and social events.

So there is sure to be something entertaining for everyone in the family.

The world famous Cirque du Soleil is based in Montreal and its style developed from the strong choreography and art traditions in the city.

If you haven’t already experienced this spectacle, its not to be missed particularly if you are planning a visit to the city of its origins!

Toronto – pros

Outdoor adventure

Toronto Island Park, High Park and Centre Island are great places for the family to embark on outdoor adventures.

Not the typical city break!

Island Park has four main islands containing trails, beaches and children’s amusement rides.

High Park offers a variety of outdoor recreation including ice-skating, baseball games, nature hikes and the park’s greenhouse.

And Centre Island has fantastic family bike ride paths.

Check out the variety of condo’s in the GTA.

Dizzy Heights

The world-famous CN Tower is a wonderful experience for all the family.

The tower was the tallest building in the world until 2010!

On a clear day you can see all the way to Niagara Falls – a truly magical experience.

Quirky Medieval Fun

The Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament transports the whole family to a different realm where Knights reign!

An inspiring, joyful and engaging production.

Kids and parents alike are guaranteed to enjoy it.

So there you have it – travel to Toronto verses Montreal; it really depends on the style of break you would like and the interests of your family.

I’m personally still trying to decide, maybe we can call a family meeting to vote!

Which would you choose?
