There is a misconception out there that opportunities to Find a REAL Work at Home Job are few and far between.
Worse is that there is even a bigger misconception that most work from home jobs are scams.
While this may be true some of the time, I’m here to tell you that you can find a real, legitimate work at home job and it’s actually pretty easy!
Below are Six Tips to Find a REAL Work at Home Job.

Table of Contents
DO believe it’s possible
There are so many opportunities out there. And, no, you don’t have to sell things.
No, you don’t have to host sales parties.
I’m not trying to get you to join any multi-level marketing program.
There are actually legitimate, well known companies that have hired employees to work from home!
And the amount of companies offering telecommuting options is growing.
There are now more companies that offer work at home jobs than ever before because, in a lot of cases, it’s more cost effective.
With an employee that works from home there is no need to provide a computer, a building, or a desk for that employee.
The good news for those looking for work from home opportunities is that it’s growing in popularity.
Believe it!
DON’T ever pay to work!
Please, please, pleeeeease never pay to work for someone.
Offers that get you to pay something upfront to work are usually a scam.
The only time I would ever suggest paying for anything is if you are starting a business or franchise and need to purchase materials to start up.
Or if you’re looking to do computer work and you don’t have a computer or transcription work and you don’t have the specific program needed, then, of course, buy it.
There are companies that work almost as scouts to find work at home jobs and they’re somewhat reputable.
But they don’t do anything for you that you couldn’t do for yourself.
There are a lot of scams out there offering to lead you to work at home jobs if you just pay a “processing fee.”
Don’t do it! Find a REAL Work at Home Job is free!
DO research a company before applying or committing to employment
If you see a prospective telecommuting job, Google the company offering the job.
See what they’re about. Make sure they’re legit.
If you can’t find a company name, stay away.
It should be easy to identify an employer immediately and you shouldn’t have to click through page after page to find out who exactly is hiring for a specific job.
Find out who you’re applying to and what their business practices are like.
DON’T forget to search for work at home jobs using keywords!
You may have noticed several times that I’ve used phrases like “work from home,” “work at home,” and “telecommute.”
These are the best keywords to use in order to find work at home jobs.
You can also add “work from home education” or “work from home customer service,” if you’d like to be more specific.
DO use your search engines
You can use your keywords from tip 4 in regular search engines.
Enter those key words in any career finding website.
Try Career Builder, Indeed.com, and even Craigslist!
You may find a local company that is hiring and offers a telecommuting option.
In fact, Craigslist has an option you can click to filter in telecommuting jobs to appear in your job search.
DON’T fall for big money promises
Supposed east to Find a REAL Work at Home Job offering big money used to be rampant on line.
Have you ever seen an advertisement that promises $1000 a day for part time hours working from home?
Stay away from scams by staying away from ads that promise big bucks for little to no experience.
If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
Do Start Your Own Blog
Another great way to work from home is to start a blog!
We have some great resources if this is something you might enjoy.
Finding a work from home job can be easier than you think.
It might seem impossible, but if you look in the right places and keep at it, you’ll find that perfect job that can be performed from the comfort of your own home.

This is great info, thanks! It’s nice to hear that remote work is on the upswing. I’m so much more efficient in the quiet of my home office!
You are so welcome! I think a lot of people get discouraged because of all of the scams out there. Or they think work at home jobs are rare. But they’re becoming more and more accessible!
I agree. I’d love to work more but finding day care in our area is so challenging it pretty much has taken that option off the table. Knowing that working from home is feasible is great inspiration!
Stay tuned, then! Next month I’ll be highlighting actual business that you’ve probably already heard of that are hiring people to work at home!
I know what you mean, Jessica! I began working from home in 2006, when my kids were just getting to middle school age. That was hard enough. I can only imagine when the children are much younger. What is your area of expertise? In my LinkedIn group, The Confident Copywriter, we do a lot of talking about the challenges of working from home and maintaining a balance with small children around. It takes good planning, but it can be done! Feel free to join the group, even if you’re not a copywriter. It entitles you to a free copy of my ebook, “LinkedIn For the Clueless…and the Curious” (available on Amazon, $15.95), and more than 2000 members are there to support you as you figure out your path.
I just now saw your reply. I will look for the group on LinkedIN. Thanks so much for the tip!
I have a friend in Oklahoma who is always coming up with some scheme to get rich quick. She has done so many of these work at home things I just assumed they were all scams. Stuffing envelopes, or whatever and they never paid because there would be a quarter inch of paper that wasn’t even with the other side of the paper (really, this was the reason she didn’t get paid once). I’d be so gun shy about any of these companies that I wouldn’t know where to even start. Any recommendations?
I totally get what you’re saying. I’ve seen those same type of “jobs” that make big claims for working from home. So I know a lot of people who don’t have experience working from home are jaded. I would be! But there are really legitimate jobs out there that you can do from home. You just have to know how to look past and ignore the scams. Use my keyword suggestions in the article with searches on Craigslist and CareerBuilder. In my next post I’ll be highlighting different companies you’ve probably used and heard of that actually offer positions and may be even hiring right now!
This is great info, and I’m so glad you put the Don’t pay to work bit above. I’ve never had to pay to “Work” for anyone, I always thought the whole idea of working was to make money, not pay someone for the privilege to work for someone else. Great post!
Exactly! And, to me, if you have to pay ANYTHING to work (besides a computer, telephone, office supplies, etc.) then you don’t want that work.

Thank you for sharing! It would maybe be an option for someone looking at starting their own business and it serves as great inspiration to those who are looking to make money from home.
Great piece, but every time I see posts on this subject I never see any company/site suggestions where one could get started…got any? 🙂
Absolutely! I’ll be featuring real companies that are even currently hiring in my next blog post. You might be surprised!
Awesome!! I look forward to it 🙂
These are great tips! I agree that people often have unrealistic expectations of working from home! I’ve looked for opportunities inthe past but I was unsuccessful.
Great tips! Especially important not to give money to make money!
This is a great post!!
I think people should definitely stay away from the “pay to work”situations.I remember when I was kid and I fell into the trap of the stuffing envelope thing which I never got paid for!!
Stay very clear of those companies. A friend of mine’s bank account was wiped out after she authorized a payment.

There was one company that wanted me to pay an upfront fee of 100 bucks to start I was like nope only time I will pay is like you said a franchise or maybe even a Direct Sales company. I also don’t want to work for any company that is commission based only. Thanks for the tips stopping over from SITS
Thank you so much for this. These are great tips. I would love to work from home. Looking forward to your next blog post. 🙂
